Coming Across the Pond – Live Non-Destructive Pipe Wall Thickness Measurements for Small Diameter Potable Watermains

This paper will present condition assessment tools providing pipe wall thickness measurement for small diameter potable watermains up to 12-in (300mm) using non-destructive technology (NDT) and in some cases without the need to interrupt the service. Most wall thickness measurement technologies require a physical access to the pipe (exposing the pipe or adding a tap) for diameters beyond 6-in (150mm), others require cleaning and some require no intervention at all. All of these technologies are available in North America and provide different levels of information. The paper will be divided into three sections. The first section will focus on pipe wall measurement technologies that require an intervention on the existing pipeline - excavation to access the pipe or interruption to the service. In this section pipe sampling, ultrasound and electromagnetic technologies will be presented. The second section will present the pipe wall measurement technologies that require no intervention prior to inspection. In this section electromagnetic and ultrasound technologies will be presented. One of the technologies also provides a simultaneous CCTV inspection. This technology can be inserted through a tap on the pipe or through a hydrant. The final section will put forward case studies from the UK and upcoming projects in North America using the ultrasound technology that does not require any interruption of the service or prior pipe preparation on the watermain. Following the case study, a comparison of the different technologies identified, as well as their limitations will be presented.
