Urban water supply system is important infrastructure for citizen’s survival, urban safety and development. Wenchuan earthquake damaged many harder-hit cities’ water supply pipelines, which was one of the main forms of the damaged water supply system caused by earthquake. On the basis of characters of water supply system and experience from the earthquake relief in Mianzhu City, combining with the characters of Xi’an City where there are long-distance water supply pipelines and locates in seismic zone, we identify that the Heihe River transfer water channels and urban water supply pipeline network are the main vulnerabilities of the seismic risk in Xi'an urban water supply system. The existing groundwater supply systems and some surface water supply systems are important components of urban emergency water supply. Through simulating the Wenchuan earthquake, we identified Xi’an City’s temporariness, emergency and restoration programs in water supply after the earthquake, in order to improve the anti-seismic capacity and emergency water supply of urban water supply system in Xi’an City and cities nearby.
