Phytoremediation Potential of Reed Grass (Arundo donax L.) for Zn-contaminated Soil

Pot experiments were conducted to research the tolerance of reed grass (Arundo donax L.) and accumulation of Zn in the plant. Plant growth and physiological response of reed grass in six Zn concentration treatments (0,250,500,1000, 2000, 4000 mg/kg) were analyzed by measuring plant biomass, root characteristics, and physiological indices. The results indicate that the biomass was not influenced by Zn and the biomass increased compared with the control in all treatments. Root length and surface area were all higher than the control, and reached the highest value 614 m and 0.76 m2, respectively. Chlorophyll was reduced 6% compared with the control, MDA (Malondialdehyde) was reduced 26.5% compared with the control under the treatment 4000 mg/kg. Total accumulation of Zn in reed grass were also measured, the results show that the concentration of Zn in above ground reached the highest value 171.5 mg/kg under the treatment 1000 mg/kg and the Zn concentration in below ground reached the highest value 554.5 mg/kg under the treatment 4000 mg/kg. Zn concentration in plants was linear correlated with the Zn concentration in soil. Total accumulation can reached 30.29 mg/pot and 5.26 mg/pot separately in above ground and below ground under the treatment 1000 mg/kg. From above results, we can conclude that reed grass has tolerance and great potential for phytoremediation of Zn-contaminated soil.
