The laser/optical PPC has been used for more than two decades as an industrial research tool for measurements in coal-fired boilers/stacks, high pressure/temperature gasifiers, pulp and paper recovery boilers, petroleum refineries, mist eliminators, and other industrial applications to provide real-time, in situ measurements of particle size, particle concentration, and flow velocity. This instrument has obtained in situ measurements at temperatures up to 1400C and pressures up to 100 bar. More recently, the PPC has been used as a process optimization tool to better understand and optimize the performance of back-pulsing for baghouses and high pressure/ temperature gasifiers, rapping cycles for ESPs, switch mode power supplies for ESPs , verification of the optimal spray droplet sizes for FGD and ensuring dry conditions at the outlet of spray dryer absorbers. The paper will present field results for all these applications, including mass balance results, showing quantitative accuracy for measurement of PM mass emissions as a function of particle size from 0.5 - 80 microns, and concentrations ranging from < 0.5 mg/acm to > 1000 mg/acm. These capabilities show that the PPC can address the newly regulated needs for a PM CEM or CPMS.
