In this study, Chlorella vulgaris was cultivated in an open system using NaHCO_3 under different DIC concentrations (15 and 144 mg C/L) and agitation speeds (0, 125, and 550 rpm). The growth under high DIC concentration and agitation was significantly increased but the growth even under high DIC concentration without agitation was not increased. The use of NaHCO_3 could keep the DIC concentration level high in the culture medium for the autotrophic cultivation. This result shows that the high DIC concentration resulting from the use of NaHCO_3 with agitation can promote the growth rate of Chlorella vulgaris.
