Plus Energy Building Concept for Dwellings based on high solar fraction and solar heat activated bricks

According the recast of the EU-Directive, future buildings are 'Nearly Zero Energy Buildings' and technically a bright variety of future building concepts exists. Two essential measures lead to such high energy performing buildings: high energy efficiency for both building envelopes and energy systems and use of renewable energy sources on site. Within the Austrian research project 'Solares Plus Haus' a plus energy building concept for a brick constructed dwelling is developed. The building energy performance in operation will be assessed by the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) by conducting a scientific monitoring from summer 2012 to 2014. Especially a high solar fraction covering the demand of heating and domestic hot water (DHW) preparation contributes significantly to a positive annual primary energy balance of the future building concept. This research activity focuses intensively on feasibility of nearly 100% use of solar heat by applying the 'Sonnenhaus-Konzept' in combination with solar heat activated brick indoor walls. The research project proves the annual energy performance with the analysis of measured monitoring data of building operation and creates advices how to design and control the solar heat activated brick walls.
