This study was aimed to investigate the remediation of anthracene contaminated soil using ultrasonic soil washing treatment. The impacts of different factors on the remediation efficiency were examined through an orthogonal experimental design approach. Four variables including initial anthracene concentration in soil, sonication time, pH of washing solution and washing flow rate were examined. A series of laboratory experiments were then conducted using an ultrasonic setup operated at a frequency of 20 KHz. The results indicated that the ultrasonic soil washing treatment was effective on anthracene removal from soil. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) illustrated that initial anthracene concentration, sonication time and soil washing flow rate had significant effect (P < 0.05) on anthracene removal. It was also found that increasing sonication time and soil washing flow rate could improve the anthracene removal rate.
