An innovative design featuring a vertical treatment shaft achieves CSO control objectives at a substantially lower cost, while simplifying operations. This award winning technology (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - PISCES A ward, 2006) is a significant departure from conventional CSO tunnels or retention treatment basins (Figure 1). In addition to the complete capture of CSOs for the vast majority of storms, this patented design, known as "Treatment Shaft Technology," (U.S. Patent Nos. 6,503,404, 7,341 ,670, 7,485,221 , Other Patents Pending) also provides high-rate flow-through treatment of overflows beyond its storage capacity, including: Skimming, settling, screening and disinfection. Flows as high as 1,200 MGD have been successfully treated without booster pumping. This option was chosen to complete the City of Dearborn, MI CSO control program in 2004, after cancelling a proposed deep rock tunnel in 1995. Three of these treatment shafts were designed, built and constructed in the period 2006 to 2010, and placed into operation between January and November 2011. The initial results on water quality improvements, operating characteristics and costs are presented below.
