Japanese traditional houses often have columns put directly on the foundation stones and it is regarded that sliding at the column bottom possibly reduces seismic force of the buildings. First in this paper, the result of time history analyses of houses using two-mass system models considering sliding at the column bottom is summarized. Next the results of a series of analyses using three-dimensional models considering column sliding and shear deformation of horizontal frames are summarized. Finally, the possibility of structural design with considering sliding at the column bottom is discussed. Analytical results show that column sliding apparently reduces storey drift of the building under some condition, and that shear deformation of first floor should be properly considered in the seismic design to allow column sliding.
