In this paper, the equivalence between a Linear Induction Machine (LIM) and an Arc Linear Induction Machine (Arc LIM) has been investigated. It is difficult to fabricate a LIM of reasonable secondary length inside a laboratory due to space constraints. Computational limitations often restrict the simulation of LIMs using Finite Element Method (FEM). An Arc LIM which is basically a rotating device can be used to bypass these practical problems faced by the user while working with a true LIM. Hence, it is essential to determine, how far an Arc LIM can mimic the performance of the original LIM. This paper calculates the force developed at different points on the secondary of a LIM and an equivalent Arc LIM at zero velocity and shows that they are approximately same. Hence an Arc Linear Induction Machine can be used to emulate a Linear Induction Machine.
