In this paper, a novel three-phase induction motor drive is proposed with an improved power converter topology. The proposed topology is a combination of a voltage boosting circuit and an 8-switch three-phase inverter configured to access the midpoint of the dc bus. It may be noted that the boosting circuit is utilized in such a way that the dc-bus capacitors are always balanced. The proposed inverter can produce 15 voltage vectors. Because of the high number of vectors, the phase current THD can be reduced. Moreover, by appropriately designing a new space vector modulation strategy the common mode voltage (CMV) can also be reduced. The proposed PWM strategy divides the space vector hexagon into 18 sectors and identifies a unique SV sequence for each sector that can reduce the CMV. Simulation studies are carried out in PLECS software to justify the theoretical claims
