Compared to commercial adult CRRT devices that typically operate with roughly 6% fluid balance error [3], the KIDS-CRRT fluid management mechanism provided less than 0.5% total error after 8-hour period across a range of flow rates. The superiorities in the pediatric-specific KIDS-CRRT design compared to adult CRRT devices include: (i) use of safe low levels of extracorporeal volume, (ii) high accuracy in UF-RF fluid management, and (iii) overall miniaturization in device size. Ongoing experimental efforts are focused on quantifying membrane motion within the pumps and inflammation testing using whole human blood. Hemodynamic tolerance of using KIDS-CRRT device on healthy vertebrate animals will be examined at the culmination of in vitro characterization.
