EFFECTS OF CARBON NANOFIBER REINFORCMENTS IN ADHESIVE BONDING OF CFRP

Recent research has shown significant enhancements in bonding performance between carbonfiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates using carbon nano-reinforced adhesives. This paperpresents the effects of using carbon nanofibers (CNF) as the reinforcement in both the adhesiveinterlayer and the matrix of the CFRP laminate. Single lap samples were prepared to specificallyaddress the consequence of introducing CNF exclusive to the local area critical to the bondinginterface of the CFRP substrates. Experimental comparisons have been provided by testing therelative shear strengths of each type of specimen. Up to 35.7% and 42.6% bondingimprovements have been found on the sample of CFRP laminates bonded with CNF-enhancedadhesive and the sample of CNF surface-enhanced CFRP laminates bonded with CNF-enhancedadhesive, respectively. This shows that CNF improves bonding through the adhesives as well asthe critical areas in the CFRP laminates.
