The 4.0-l V8 TFSI engines from Audi are a new development that introduces thedownsizing strategy to the high-performance market segment. They are twin-turboengines that develop up to 382 kW (520 bhp). Thanks to forced aspiration, the V8 TFSIdevelops a supreme flow of power, with up to 650 Nm of torque available at enginespeeds between 1700 and 5500 rpm.The cylinder head concept with the intake system on the outside and the exhaustsystem on the inside is designed to keep the gas flow paths short, with minimal flowlosses. The engine, with its two twin-scroll turbochargers, has a highly spontaneousthrottle response. As a highlight on these engines, the ‘cylinder on demand’ system,based on the Audi valvelift system (AVS) is employed. In addition, friction losses havebeen significantly reduced by various measures, and innovative thermal management(ITM) adopted.The new V8 TFSI will initially be available in the Audi S6, S7 and S8 models. Both theAudi S6 and the Audi S8 from the previous model generation were powered by a5.2-l V10 FSI engine. The change to the new 4.0-l V8 TFSI has cut CO2 emissions by asmuch as 25% despite much improved performance figures.
