The City of Edmonton Transportation Services Department's Neighbourhood Renewal Program outlines a cost effective, long term strategic approach to address Edmonton's neighbourhood infrastructure needs and the renewal and rebuilding of roads, sidewalks and streetlights in existing neighbourhoods and collector roadways. The Neighbourhood Renewal Program evolved over the period 2006 to 2008; the first stage of the analysis was to evaluate the overall required investment over 30 years to achieve an acceptable level of performance for the neighbourhoods' assets, including transportation assets and drainage assets. Attention was then turned to the implementation side, and analysis was performed regarding the best alternative between a joint prioritization program for transportation assets and drainage assets or separate prioritization programs. The last stage was the establishment of the prioritization list for transportation assets and drainage assets. In 2008 the Neighbourhood Renewal Program was adopted by the City Council and dedicated funds were established. This paper will present the modelling methodology developed to establish the Neighbourhood Renewal Program, give an update on the program's current status and future plans, and share the knowledge of the development of a sustainable neighbourhood infrastructure program.
