Looking to today and beyond, the refining industry faces interesting challenges- namely a shrinking gasoline market, which has been the primary mainstay of the business. Economic and legislative factors are shaping the future for refining conversion. This will leave the U.S. refiners with the challenge of how to best utilize the expected open capacity while preserving the fixed asset base. As propylene demand continues to grow, refiners can leverage their FCC technology through the application of the concepts discussed in this paper.
