The instrumentation group of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics was commissioned by the Gemini Observatory todevelop a new focal plane assembly for the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph with an array of three deep-depletionHamamatsu CCDs. The main objective of the upgrade is to improve the sensitivity of the instrument in the red and nearinfraredwavelengths, with the additional benefits of reduced fringing, faster readout, and better performance in the "nodand shuffle" mode. We describe what we learned about these relatively new CCDs, including several problemsencountered during testing, and report on the performance of the system.© (2012) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
