Urban drainage simulation models require a number of specific parameters due to the spatial variability of river basins characteristics making it difficult to adopt pre-established values. A reliable representation of the drainage system flows requires determination of these parameters through calibration. An automatic calibration procedure applicable to the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM -version 5.0) is described in this paper. It was developed by modifying the computer code of the SWMM software package used for objective functions evaluations by the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) optimization method using controlled elitism. Preliminary tests were conducted in order to verify the reliability and efficiency of the model calibrator applying it to the drainage system example provided in the SWMM installation package. The results obtained from these tests suggest that the proposed calibrator can be considered a useful tool for drainage system behavior forecast, as the calibrated model predicted the observed outputs with satisfactory accuracy.
