The savanna management problem is used in the literature as an example for a system where the management decisions are important in identifying the harmonious interactions between the state variables of the natural habitats for their harmonious cohabitation. In this study we study the problem from the resilience and sustainable development perspective. We propose a dynamic optimization model for the management of the savanna system. In the model, maximization of economic profit is chosen as the objective function while requirements for resilience and sustainability of the system are chosen as the constraints expressed as the desired final state. The model is solved using an iterative algorithm. An example with a specified desired final state is used to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the model and algorithms. Numerical experiments show that the optimal strategies obtained from the dynamic optimization model can achieve maximum economic benefit from raising grazing cattle in the planning period, and also can significantly improve the resilience of the rangeland so that the system can operate in a stable region of the solution domain.
