The corrosion behaviour of stainless steel 316 in simulated hot (up to supercritical) geothermal water containing chloride and sulphate has been studied. A continuous flow apparatus has been used. The apparatus was equipped with a tubular reactor made of SS316, which is also the corrosion-sample. The tubular reactor was ex posed to temperatures from 20 to 400 °C at 250 bar pressure. Stress corrosion cracking and pitting were detected after some hundred hours of exposure.
