Housing of an air filter, made of 5083 aluminum alloy, was installed on a heavy duty bulldozer. Severe corrosion damage was detected on the housing underbelly after few months of operation in various regions of Israel. The corroded sites were covered with accumulated soil as a result of dust upwards lifts by caterpillar movement on the ground. In order to determine the causes of this corrosion event, various parameters of soil samples from the corroded surface sites were examined for: : a) chemical and microbial soil composition; b) chemical analysis of corrosion products and c) conductivity of the dry and wet soils. Corrosion behavior of specimens made of tested aluminum alloy exposed to soil at various soil conditions was investigated by electrochemical measurements and weight loss test.
