Corrosion of 5083 Aluminum Alloy Air Filter Housings

Severe corrosion attack had occurred on 5083 Al (UNS A95083) air filter housings on several bulldozers after a few months of operation. The corroded housings were covered with a thick layer of packed soil. To determine the cause of this corrosion, the soil conductivity and the chemical and microbial compositions were measured. Corrosion was investigated by electrochemical measurements and weight loss tests.
