This paper introduces the development, implementation and evaluation of a multi-modal user interface for in-vehicle infotainment. A short throw projector-based reconfigurable user interface provides a large curved form factor while at the same time introducing a new type of multi-modal human machine interface, one that provides real tactile reconfigurable controls (touch, physical knobs, buttons and sliders). Previous projector-based implementations have been hindered by large throw-depths, making real-world implementation difficult. New, small form-factor LED projectors have become dramatically brighter in recent years, enabling a small form factor display system with a myriad of potential safety and usability advantages. This paper discusses the challenges of creating the short-throw optics, of integrating the resulting technology into a prototype vehicle and the results of a preliminary usability study using paper prototyping examining genY and baby-boomer end-users. The usability testing illustrates the importance of incorporating "user-centered design" principles to ensure systems are appropriate to a broad age span.
