Different Antioxidant Responses to Salt Stress in Five Different Varieties of Ornamental Kale

To compare the salt-tolerance of ornamental kale varieties, five different varieties (Nagoya, Tokyo, Osaka, Pigeon and Kamome) were treated by 0 mM (control) and 200 mM NaCl respectively. The growth, electrolyte leakage rate, and proline content, protective enzymes activity were investigated. Under salt stress, the increments of height, relative water content (RWC), dry weight of root and shoot were suppressed. Compared with the control, salt treatment significantly promoted superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activities, electrolyte leakage rate, proline, and soluble sugar contents, but declined soluble protein contents in four ornamental kale varieties except Nagoya. The change rates of these indexes in Pigeon were the highest. These results suggest that Nagoya is the most salt-tolerant, and Pigeon is the weakest.
