The acid hydrogen peroxide system (Fenton-type chemistry) was studied in lab scale in the presence of pulp and the influence of reaction pH, type and amount of iron catalysts on hydrogen peroxide consumption, decomposition and hydroxyl radical formation was evaluated. The amount of decomposed (to O2) hydrogen peroxide was minimal at low pH but increased with increasing pH whereas the opposite was true for the amount of consumed (other than for O2 generation) hydrogen peroxide. When free ferrous ion was used as catalyst at low pH the highest amount of hydrogen peroxide was consumed. The influence of pH hydrogen peroxide was consumed. The influence of pH was less significant when chelated iron was used as catalyst. Hydroxyl radicals were detected when hydrogen peroxide was consumed. The hydroxyl radical yield was influenced by reaction pH and followed different trends if the iron catalyst was added as free ferrous ion or as chelated iron.
