Heat Flux Measurement on High Temperature Materials in Extreme Environments

This paper reports on the design and evaluation of two heat flux sensors specifically made for operation in the harshest of thermal environments. The High Temperature Heat Flux Sensor (HTHFS) and the Direct Write Heat Flux Sensor (DWHFS) are thermoelectric sensors which measure both heat flux and surface temperature and can therefore accurately describe the actual net heat flux to any surface. Furthermore, by utilizing advanced fabrication techniques, the DWHFS can be fabricated onto, or embedded within functional coatings, such as thermal barrier coatings. Results are presented which demonstrate the capabilities of the two sensors under various testing conditions.
