Landslide hazards on engineered slopes during periodic wet spells: Case of Singapore

Damages to roads, infrastructure, and property due to slope failures during heavy rainfall events in urban Singapore are well-documented. This study highlights repeated failures on engineered slopes in response to cycles of wet and dry spells to show a close relationship between the frequently occurring cyclic weather phenomena and a natural geomorphic event that has the potential of becoming a hazard in urban areas. In view of this hazard potential of engineered slopes, attention needs to be focussed on managing it to reduce inconvenience, and possible disruption to the urban system.
