The Influence of Glucose Concentration on the Performance of an Ag Plated Fiber Anode by Cyclic Voltammetry

As part of the efforts to develop glucose fuelled Alkaline Fuel Cell with silver anodes, we studied the following aspects of the oxidation reaction of glucose: 1) The number of electrons delivered eleetrochemically by the glucose molecule; 2) The reversibility of the oxidation; and 3) The influence of glucose concentration on the current. Measurements were performed with the Cyclic Voltametric technique using solutions of glucose in 1 M KOH, with two kinds of silver electrodes. We found out that: 1) Two electrons are transferred; 2) The reaction is totally irreversible; and 3) The current has a maximum value at a glucose concentration of 0.4 M. An explanation to this maximum is given by arguing that at concentrations of glucose higher than 0.4 M the diffusion of glucose molecules towards the electrode, decreases.
