This study presents an analytical approach on shape effect of assembled element to angle of repose obtained by distinct element method. First of all, the angles of repose were actually measured, using the material of three different shapes of gravels; harden coal ash, cobble stone, and coarse aggregation. In various experimental methodology of the angle of repose, this experiment adopts drained method and pointed out that the roughness of the gravel shape affects the angle of repose. The distinct element method used in this study adopts an assembled element which is composed by 6 spherical elements to analyze the angles of repose. The assembled element can express a variety of gravel shape. Then the roughness of the gravel shape is modeled by a symmetrical octahedron shape composed by 6 sphere elements. Changing ratio of long radius to short radius to assembled element, called shape property in this study, the angles of repose are simulated to check the effect of the assembled shape property on the angle of repose obtained by the distinct element method. The analysis results show a clear relationship between the shape property and the angles of repose, and some results are almost identical to those of experiments from viewpoint of the angles of repose and the dispersion characteristics of gravels.
