The plant species Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) grown in hydroponic solutions containing varied concentrations of zinc were subjected to different environmental test conditions such as darkness, illumination and illumination with alternate current (AC) gradient. Zinc accumulated in plant roots during the test period was proportional to its concentration in the hydrophonic solution. Augmentation of zinc concentration in roots and shoots attained a plateau with increasing concentration of zinc in the solution. Plants subjected to a light environment accumulated more zinc in their roots and shoots than plants subjected to a dark environment. The applied AC gradient of 1 volt/cm at 16Hz reduced the plant's ability to extract zinc from the solution.
