20 YEARS OF PERSPECTIVE: DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONAL'S VIEWS ON IMPROVING MICROTUNNELING

Over the past 20 years, microtunneling has become a better understood and more widely accepted trenchless installation method. As more projects are successfully completed and new advances are made, the limits of the technology are constantly being expanded. Unfortunately, not all projects are completed without incident, and change orders do occur. However, the lessons learned from mistakes made during design and construction can help everyone involved in a project - owner, designer, and contractor - to better understand the possible pitfalls associated with specialized pipejacking construction. This paper presents the results of frank discussions between design professionals and experienced contractors about common problems seen in many microtunneling designs. Through this collaboration, we hope to highlight elements that are crucial to a successful design and will help the contractor to better evaluate the potential risks involved and, consequently, the cost of construction. By clarifying the design intent and reducing ambiguity in the specifications and drawings, owners will be more confident that they will receive accurate bids from well-informed contractors.
