Abstract: This paper describes the investigative tools and techniques, learning’s, andlogistical challenges faced by an international team assembled to uncover the source ofsurface tears in newly manufactured 5083 and 6061 aluminum alloy pipe elbows. Acold box exchanger, with its complex piping layout, and a challenging projectconstruction schedule required a thoughtful and effective strategy for non-destructivetesting (NDT), component review and sampling, and mechanical and metallurgicaltesting of similarly-manufactured replica pipe elbows. Good cooperation between theend user operator, Engineering Procurement, Construction & Management Company(EPCM), cross-functional subject matter experts, and the cold box exchanger and pipeelbow manufacturers culminated in a successful outcome and repair.
