Influence Factor of Hydrogen Generation from Aluminum-Water Reaction

The effects of NaOH concentration, mineral additive and initial temperature on hydrogen generation from aluminum water reaction were investigated using gas chromatography, X-ray diffraction detection and scanning electron microscope on the reaction gas and solid product. The results show that NaOH which provides a basic alkaline culture is involved in the reaction process, and the hydrogen purity is more than 99.99%. Three additives namely calcium oxide (CaO), magnesium oxide (MgO) and sodium chloride(NaCl), prepared with aluminum powder in bags are used to enhance the reaction rate and yield. A maximum conversion of 86.15% with respect to aluminum is achieved after150min. The initial temperature affects the reaction induction period and rate, while the final hydrogen conversion rate is not affected by the initial temperature.
