This paper concerns a reliability-based topology optimisation method (RBTO) for double layer grids that considers uncertainties in applied loads and non-structural masses. Regarding multiple criteria i.e. stiffness and eigenvalue as a series system estimates their effect upon system reliability where the probability of failure in each mode can be evaluated by combining Mont Carlo simulation method (MCS) and the third order approximation (TOA). Through a numerical example, reliability-based topology designs of typical double layer grids are obtained by ant colony optimisation (ACO) method. The importance of considering uncertainties is then demonstrated by comparing the results obtained by the proposed method with deterministic optimal designs.
