Close proximity wireless technology features a propagation distance through space of under 10 cm, which enables natural actions like touching or holding something to act as a trigger for initiating communications. This feature is expected to have a wide range of applications. In this paper, we describe the relationship between application scenarios and future needs focusing on the transmission speeds of various close proximity wireless systems and the volume of data that can be instantaneously transmitted using the shortwave band, microwave band, and sub-terahertz band. We also present experimental results on the possibility of near-body electric-field communications in the 5-10 MHz band and close-range wireless links in the sub-terahertz 300-400 GHz band.
