Alkaline polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (APEMFC) containing alkaline anion-exchange membranes (AAEM), fuelled with hydrogen, small molecule alcohols, ethylene glycol, or sodium borohydride, have been attracting worldwide interest (1-6). The main reasons for this are: (a) The potential use of non-platinum-group metals (7-13); (b) Increasing evidence of the ability to operate in the presence of carbonate/bicarbonate species formed from the CO_2 in air, due to the presence of a self-purging mechanism (14-18); and (d) Increasing evidence that the conductivities are being under-estimated (because the polymer electrolytes are probably present in mixed alkaline anion form in many studies - see later discussions) (19-22).
