One of the major issues associated with fuel cells is the overall cost of the energy they produce. There are many components in a fuel cell and some are quite expensive. A good example is the Pt used as an oxygen reduction catalyst. Pt is both expensive and in short supply, so finding a replacement for Pt that provides acceptable performance at a significantly reduced cost would be a big step towards bringing fuel cells to the mass market.
