Game Changer: Development of Web-Based, Geospatial, Interactive Dam Breach Inundation Maps for Great River Hydro's Dams

GZA was retained by Great River Hydro, LLC to update Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for 16 dams. A key component of an EAP is the inundation maps, which illustrate the anticipated extent of dam breach flooding. This project included dam breach modeling and flood wave mapping for over 450 river miles, resulting in 81 impacted towns. EAPs are typically provided to stakeholders as hard copy reports. A goal for this project was to provide an innovative and efficient means to access and distribute the EAPs and inundation maps. The solution was to provide web-based interactive inundation maps hosted through GZA's GeoTool? web mapping application. This innovative tool provides interactive access to EAP information including the inundation mapping, dam locations, hydrographs and other EAP documents, via desktop and mobile devices.
