DAM BREACH ANALYSIS, HAZARD CLASSIFICATION,AND INUNDATION MAPPING IN COLORADO DRAFT-JUNE 4, 2012

The Colorado Dam Safety Branch developed the "Guidelines for Dam Breach Analysis" and "Guidelines for Hazard Classification" as a first step in resuming the hydrologic review of spillway adequacy for existing dams located above 7,500 feet in Colorado. The guidance documents were created to establish consistency in the design of new dams and safety evaluation of existing dams in Colorado by dam safety engineers and the engineering community. Through the course of their development, every effort was made to make the recommendations as useable as possible over a broad range of conditions. However, each dam is unique and individual cases may require different modeling approaches than those recommended. The Guidelines are not a design standard; they are a resource to ensure an objective and consistent approach to determine the hazard classification of dams in Colorado.
