The application of titanium alloys is limited due to poor corrosion resistance at contact with some aggressive media, such as aqueous solutions of inorganic acids. In order to improve protective properties methods of surface engineering are used to modify near-surface layers of Ti alloys. A broad variety of different hard coatings based on binary compounds (TiN, TiC and TiO) were traditionally used in industry to improve service properties of titanium surface. Recent researches report that promising coatings to succeed in surface engineering are multicomponent compounds such as TiC-xN-1-x, TiC-xO-1-x and TiN-xO-1-x. Although properties of these compounds are inherited from binary ones, their microhardness, wear and corrosion resistance are higher than binary ones.
