Many years ago, when widespread access to electronic computers revolutionized structural analysis, the older analysis methods were gradually set aside along with their techniques and requirements. Even with the advancement of technology, the use of classical methods of analysis to aid development of new designs is still beneficial. One classical method used extensively in the design of lattice electrical transmission towers is graphical static analysis. The identifying feature of this method is the uniquely patterned force diagrams found on analysis sheets of old designs. This paper will demonstrate the relevance of the graphical method for designing new lattice transmission towers, even with the wealth of powerful software available. Explanation of the fundamental methods and diagrams, underlying assumptions for analysis, interpretation of historical diagrams, and development of efficient geometry will also be shown. Knowledge of fundamental statics is presumed.
