The dissimilar butt welded joints of reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steel (RAF/M) F82H and austenite stainless steels by friction stir welding (FSW) were studied. The effect of the tool and plate positions was considered in order to prohibit the mixing of the F82H and austenite stainless steels. When the dissimilar butt FSW was performed, the F82H steel was on the advancing side and the tool was plunged on the F82H side, defect-free joints could be successfully fabricated. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the dissimilar butt joints were then evaluated. In addition, the butt FSW of the F82H and austenite stainless steel were successfully performed below the A_(C1) (840°CC) temperature.
