Use of Garage Doors to Resist Lateral Forces

Existing wood-panel, sectional, overhead garage doors have been shown inpreliminary proof-of-concept testing to be effective as load transfer and energydissipation elements in soft-story, wood-framed buildings. Such doors performedsurprisingly well and, with further development of uplift restraint devices andadditional testing, may be recommended for soft-story reinforcement in certainbuildings.
