Numerous techniques and devices have been developed for field installation or repair of fiber optic cables under various circumstances. The techniques generally fall into three groups: field termination, mechanical splicing, and fusion splicing. Almost without exception individual products address only particular problems, cables, platforms, or company technologies. This paper outlines a global or “complete solution” by drawing on all three major technology groups and showing how alignment of needs and solutions can provide optimum technical support for virtually any cable plant. In addition, the latest results in explosion-proof on-aircraft fusion splicing and thermally stable mechanical splicing will be presented.
