Local voltage support from distributed energy resources to prevent air conditioner motor stalling

Micro voltage collapse sometimes occurs when there is a high percentage of low inertia air conditioner (A/C) motors in the power systems. The stalling of the A/C motors results in the phenomenon of fault induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR). A hybrid load model including typical building loads, A/C motor loads, and other induction motor loads is built to simulate the A/C motor stalling phenomena. Furthermore, distributed energy resources (DERs) with local voltage support capability are utilized in the simulations to boost the local bus voltage during a fault and prevent motor stalling. The simulation results are presented. The analysis of the simulation results shows that local voltage support from multiple DERs system can effectively and economically prevent A/C motor stalling.
