This paper presents a new approach to the design of nonnegative finite impulse response (NNFIR) lowpass filters. The work is motivated by the unsatisfactory performance of current NNFIR filter design procedures and its importance in a variety of application areas, especially biomedical signal processing. The presented method is based on our previous result [1] that characterizes frequency domain limitations for this class of filters. Performance comparisons in terms of passband gains, stopband gains as well as the resulting system order are provided. This new approach demonstrates significantly better performance than the best previous design methods that were reported in the literature.
