Analysis of Soil Wetness Variations Using AMSR-E Data in Huaihe River Basin

Huaihe River Basin is an area where flood and waterlogging disaster happened very frequently. The disaster has mad adverse impacts on the region's economic development. Precipitation-runoff processes are correlated with catchment's hydrological conditions. The estimation of soil wetness variations is of considerable importance to improve the reliability of flood warning. Passive microwave data present a potential for flood-waterlogging monitoring and soil moistures estimation. In this paper, soil wetness temporal and spatial variations characteristic were analyzed from 2003 to 2006 years, on the basis of long-term multi-temporal ASMR-E data in Huaihe River Basin. We find that serious flood may approach in the area when a higher soil moisture zone along the Huaihe River comes into being. Furthermore, relationship between soil wetness and precipitation were investigated. The result can provide important information for flood and waterlogging disaster prevention and mitigation in Huaihe River Basin.
