For the advanced treatment of drinking water by activated carbon, the effects of adsorption on removal of dichloroacetic acid, dibromochloromethane, benzene and carbaryl in water, as well as the competitive adsorption between these pollutants were investigated with three different activated carbon (new carbon, regenerated carbon and used carbon). The results showed that good effect of the adsorption was achieved using the new carbon and regenerated carbon compared with the used one; competitive adsorption, depending upon the adsorption capacity or point position of the activated carbon and the diffusion velocity, adsorption strength, structure and functional groups of the pollutants, was available for the removal of organic compounds; it was capable for sodium hypochlorite to have redox reaction with the pollutants and accelerate the desorption of organic compounds which had been adsorbed in the activated carbon, and the concentration of the pollutants in water, therefore, became unstable.
