BUSINESS INTEGRATION BETWEEN CAD/CAM AND ERP SYSTEMS IN SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY

Shipbuilding enterprises today have recognized the importance of information systems for the design process and the company management. Typically, they employ both computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing and enterprise resources planning (ERP) systems. For the CAD/CAM systems, Product Data Management (PDM) has appeared for data integration of legacy systems. Originally, they utilize diverse storage and representation mechanisms. In the forthcoming decades, more manufacturers will focus on the interactions between CAD/CAM and ERP in order to achieve optimized profit and control. This paper will demonstrate the gap between CAD/CAM and ERP for present situation, study the interfaces between the two systems from the business point of view; explain specific methods involved in connecting CAD/CAM with ERP; suggest technical solutions for a successful combination. These concerns will illustrate the significance of integrating design systems and management systems (ERP systems). Furthermore, the road to achieve this goal is a partner-involved, effort-demanding process.
