Excellent ship powering performance is an important goal for ship designers. So at the stage of preliminary ship design, it is of great practical value to effectively predict ship powering performance and rationally choose the main parameters of ship hull. In this paper, a database is established for large container ships based on the choice of ship hulls with good performances. Taking advantage of the artificial neural network method which possesses excellent performance in predicting nonlinear relationships, the authors take the major ship parameters and ship speed as inputs, the criteria of ship powering performance as output, and aim to establish a nonlinear relationship between them. Furthermore, the effect of hull parameters on ship powering performance is investigated. Based on the study a computer code is developed for the prediction of ship powering performance.
